Arizona Derby Expo

Roller derby has taken the nation by storm. Just a few short years ago, only a mere handful of teams existed. Two in Austin, Texas, one here in Phoenix and one in Tucson. Today, there are hundreds of teams across the nation. There are thousands of skaters. There are special clothing lines at national chain outlets. And there is even an upcoming feature film, produced by and starring Drew Barrymore.

To celebrate the growth of the sport it helped revive, AZ Roller Derby is hosting teams from all over the state in a roller derby expo. Tucson Roller Derby, Northern AZ Roller Derby, and a brand new men’s team from Tucson, the Dry Heat Militia, will be skating with Phoenix’s AZ Roller Derby to bring exposure of the sport to Valley residents, while bringing the hurt to each other! The event will be held on Sunday, September 20th at USA Skateland in Mesa (7 E. Southern Ave., just north of US-60, 480.833.7775). Doors will open at 6pm; tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door, and can be purchased at AzRollerDerby.com.

If you have never seen roller derby, imagine if a hockey fan met and fell in love with a NASCAR fan. Then, to celebrate their love, they created an awesome new sport where participants raced really fast on an elliptical track (a la stock car), but really made it a point to crash into opponents while skating (such as in hockey). Now, imagine all of that at a live, spirited event, and you have a pretty good notion of a modern day derby game, or “bout.” Not only are you sure to have the time of your life whilst at the bout, but if you see roller derby before Barrymore’s movie comes out, you can lament how Hollywood has once again exploited your youth!

In review, your attendance thus assures: 1) knowledge of a cool new take on the sport of roller derby, 2) seeing representatives of the sport’s athletes from all over our great state, 3) high quality, yet stunningly affordable entertainment, 4) the popularity associated with deriding those Hollywood So-and-so’s. You can’t lose!

Corey held the controls to the camera for this event and came out with some great photos. The majority are posted at DryHeatDerby.com but here are a few that didn’t fit into that sites format…

AZDD 10_11_08

*EDIT* Software change complete.
Sheeza, Smoke, Justin, Gianni and I all went up to Phoenix to watch an AZDD bout. As far as Smoke and I were concerned, it was the Vanessa Velocity show. You will see why.
It ain’t WFTDA (note the overall lack of mouth guards. They had the same disregard for rule enforcement) but, it was entertaining none the less.
There are a hundred pictures here and Justin gets photo credit for some of them.
